Turkish Shawarma Recipe
Ingredients
- 500g thinly sliced boneless chicken or beef (you can also use lamb)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground paprika
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 pita bread or flatbreads
- Toppings of your choice (e.g., sliced tomatoes, onions, cucumber, lettuce)
- Tahini sauce or yogurt sauce (optional)
- Hot sauce (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS
STEP 1: In a mixing bowl, combine the olive oil, minced garlic, ground cumin, ground paprika, ground coriander, ground turmeric, salt, and pepper. Mix well to create a marinade.
STEP 2: Add the thinly sliced chicken, beef, or lamb to the marinade, ensuring all the meat is well coated. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to infuse.
STEP 3: Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the marinated meat and cook, stirring frequently, until it's cooked through and slightly crispy around the edges. This should take about 5-7 minutes.
STEP 4: While the meat is cooking, warm your pita bread or flatbreads in a dry skillet or microwave until they're soft and pliable.
STEP 5: Assemble your shawarma: Lay a warm pita bread flat on a plate. Place a portion of the cooked meat in the center of the bread.
STEP 6: Add your choice of toppings, such as sliced tomatoes, onions, cucumber, and lettuce, on top of the meat.
STEP 7: Drizzle with tahini sauce or yogurt sauce if desired, and add a few dashes of hot sauce for some extra kick.
STEP 8: Fold the sides of the pita bread over the filling, creating a wrap or pocket.
STEP 9: Serve your homemade Turkish shawarma immediately while it's still warm and enjoy!
Note: You can customize this shawarma by adding other toppings like pickles, radishes, or even some crumbled feta cheese. Feel free to adjust the seasonings and sauces to suit your taste preferences.
